The ‘Bailey Compact’ Amur Maple is a refined, smaller form of the beloved Amur maple, prized for its brilliant fall color, hardiness, and neat, rounded shape. This large shrub offers lush green foliage through summer, transforming into fiery shades of red, orange, and scarlet in autumn — a true showstopper in any landscape.
Growing to about 7-8 feet tall and wide, ‘Bailey Compact’ maintains a dense, symmetrical form, making it an excellent choice for small yards, borders, or foundation plantings. In spring, it produces clusters of fragrant yellow-white flowers, followed by small red samaras (helicopter seeds) that add seasonal interest.
Exceptionally cold-hardy (zones 3–7), this variety thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including slightly alkaline conditions. Low-maintenance and adaptable, it’s ideal for those seeking compact size, vivid color, and year-round appeal in a durable northern-hardy ornamental.
Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B. The plants are also not having to go through the adjustment period of acclimating to different soil conditions since they are not coming in a medium. For more information, please see CSU Extension Service’s “The Science of Planting Trees.”
Pickup for all Bare Root Plants will take place at The Shire at Old Ranch (3860 Old Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908) March 28th and 29th from 9:00am-5:00pm.
