A classic all-purpose apple prized for its vibrant color and refreshing taste. The Cortland produces medium-sized, bright red fruit with a subtle green blush and a sprightly, tropical-sweet flavor that’s both crisp and juicy. Its snow-white flesh resists browning, making it a favorite for fresh eating, fruit trays, and salads, as well as for baking and cider.
This dependable tree is known for its heavy, annual yields and excellent cold hardiness, thriving in zones 4–7. A mid-season bloomer and mid-fall harvest, Cortland apples ripen after McIntosh, extending your picking season. The tree features showy pink-tinged spring blossoms, strong branching, and beautiful fall color, making it ornamental as well as productive.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and pair with another mid-season variety for best pollination. Grows to about 12–15 ft tall on semi-dwarf rootstock. A reliable, northern-hardy favorite with a long heritage—perfect for those who want beauty, flavor, and performance all in one tree.
Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B. The plants are also not having to go through the adjustment period of acclimating to different soil conditions since they are not coming in a medium. For more information, please see CSU Extension Service’s “The Science of Planting Trees.”
Pickup for all Bare Root Plants will take place at The Shire at Old Ranch (3860 Old Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908) on March 28th and 29th from 9:00am-5:00pm.
