The Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry is a superior, cold-hardy variety cherished for its sweet-tart flavor, heavy yields, and ornamental appeal. The medium-sized berries ripen to a deep wine-red color, with a thin yet durable skin and juicy, aromatic flesh that’s excellent for fresh eating, pies, preserves, or sauces.
This compact, arching shrub typically grows 3–5 feet tall and wide, featuring attractive green foliage and small, inconspicuous spring flowers that give way to abundant fruit in mid- to late summer. The berries are easy to pick and hold well on the plant.
Extremely hardy in zones 4-6, Hinnomaki Red performs best in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It’s disease-resistant, especially to powdery mildew, and low-maintenance once established. A classic European variety that combines excellent flavor, reliable production, and northern hardiness — perfect for home orchards and edible landscapes.
Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B. The plants are also not having to go through the adjustment period of acclimating to different soil conditions since they are not coming in a medium. For more information, please see CSU Extension Service’s “The Science of Planting Trees.”
Pickup for all Bare Root Plants will take place at The Shire at Old Ranch (3860 Old Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908) March 28th and 29th from 9:00am-5:00pm.
