Jostaberry

The Jostaberry is a unique and vigorous hybrid of black currant, gooseberry, and wild gooseberry, prized for its large, nearly black berries that blend the rich flavor of currants with the sweetness of gooseberries. The fruit is juicy, aromatic, and mildly tart, excellent for fresh eating, jams, jellies, pies, and juices.

This thornless, fast-growing shrub typically reaches 4–6 feet tall and 4 feet wide, with a dense, upright habit and deep green foliage that turns golden in fall. It produces small yellow flowers in spring, followed by heavy crops of berries in mid- to late summer. The fruit is borne on new wood and can yield for decades with minimal care.

Exceptionally hardy in zones 3–8, the Jostaberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It’s resistant to powdery mildew and white pine blister rust, making it easier to grow than many currant or gooseberry varieties. A low-maintenance, cold-hardy, and highly productive shrub that adds both ornamental and edible value to any landscape.

Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B.
