The Nanking Cherry is a hardy, early-blooming shrub cherished for its masses of pink-tinged white flowers in early spring and its bright red, flavorful cherries that ripen in early summer. The fruit is sweet-tart and juicy, perfect for fresh eating, preserves, or wildlife, and the spring blossoms make it one of the first signs of the growing season.
This vigorous, spreading shrub typically grows 8–10 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide, forming a dense, rounded shape ideal for windbreaks, borders, or naturalized plantings. Its lightly fuzzy green leaves add summer texture, and in fall they take on soft yellow tones.
Extremely hardy in zones 2–6, they thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating a range of conditions including drought once established. A low-maintenance, cold-hardy favorite, Nanking Cherry provides three-season interest, reliable crops, and an early nectar source for pollinators — making it a true asset in northern landscapes.
Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B. The plants are also not having to go through the adjustment period of acclimating to different soil conditions since they are not coming in a medium. For more information, please see CSU Extension Service’s “The Science of Planting Trees.”
Pickup for all Bare Root Plants will take place at The Shire at Old Ranch (3860 Old Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908) March 28th and 29th from 9:00am-5:00pm.
