The Purpleleaf Sand Cherry is a beautiful, compact ornamental shrub valued for its striking deep purple foliage and fragrant spring blossoms. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it’s covered with delicate pale pink to white flowers, which attract pollinators and create a lovely contrast against the rich foliage that follows.
This rounded shrub typically grows 8 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide, making it ideal for borders, foundations, or accent plantings. The vibrant reddish-purple leaves hold their color all season long, providing long-lasting visual appeal, and small dark purple fruits appear in late summer, enjoyed by birds and wildlife.
Hardy in zones 3–8, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It’s cold-hardy, fast-growing, and easy to maintain with light pruning after flowering. A longtime landscape favorite, the Purpleleaf Sand Cherry adds year-round color, fragrance, and texture to northern gardens.
Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B. The plants are also not having to go through the adjustment period of acclimating to different soil conditions since they are not coming in a medium. For more information, please see CSU Extension Service’s “The Science of Planting Trees.”
Pickup for all Bare Root Plants will take place at The Shire at Old Ranch (3860 Old Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908) March 28th and 29th from 9:00am-5:00pm.
