The Red Lake Currant is a long-standing favorite for its heavy yields of bright red, flavorful berries and dependable cold hardiness. Clusters of glossy, tart-sweet fruit ripen in mid-summer, perfect for jellies, jams, baking, or fresh eating. The berries are rich in vitamin C and attract birds and pollinators alike.
This upright, compact shrub typically grows 3–6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, with dense green foliage that looks attractive even when not in fruit. It blooms in spring with small, yellow-green flowers before the fruit develops. Red Lake is known for its excellent productivity and consistency, even in northern climates.
Hardy in zones 3–7, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It’s self-fertile but will produce larger yields when planted with other currants. A low-maintenance, reliable shrub that delivers beautiful fruit, early-season flowers, and easy care — a must-have for edible and ornamental gardens alike.
Why Bare Root
The benefits of buying and planting bare root trees are extensive. Bare root trees are more cost effective and will typically reach their mature size quicker. They are easier to manage and plant due to not being established within a medium in a container. Bare root shrubs and trees will grow faster since they have 200% more root mass than that of trees purchased in a container or B&B. The plants are also not having to go through the adjustment period of acclimating to different soil conditions since they are not coming in a medium. For more information, please see CSU Extension Service’s “The Science of Planting Trees.”
Pickup for all Bare Root Plants will take place at The Shire at Old Ranch (3860 Old Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908) March 28th and 29th from 9:00am-5:00pm.
